Wasauksing First Nation, Oil Pit Remediation, Parry Island, ON

Project Objective/Description:

The remediation project consisted of four (4) separate, distinct oil pit locations on Parry Island on  Wasauksing First Nation (WFN) Territory. Cleanup efforts after the spill nearly seventy (70) years ago included loading, and transporting the oil contaminated materials from the harbour to four (4) select areas on the island, and then capped and perimeters bermed with surrounding earth.

Project scope:

The scope of work included the following activities:

  • Preparation and implementation of a Site Specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP), and environmental protection measure.
  • Mobilization of materials, supplies, equipment and personnel.
  • Topographic survey of the four (4) sites completed by a Canadian Land Surveyor (CLS).
  • Construct and maintain site access roads.
  • Collect and submit soil samples for characterization (TCLP)
  • Clearing and grubbing activities.
  • Monitoring well decommissioning activities.
  • Contaminated (non-hazardous) soil excavation, loading and hauling off‐site for disposal at appropriate MECP         receiving facility.
  • Groundwater / surface water management, and off-site     disposal, as required.
  • Supply, place and compact clean backfill.
  • Site restoration activities, including 0.150 meters of topsoil and seeding.
  • Demobilization of materials, supplies, equipment and personnel from the project site and grubbing activities.
